****************************************************** PR # 42196 We propose an investigation of a newly discovered cluster of galaxies at z=0.3, 1E 0657-56, for which CCD imaging has revealed the presence of a luminous arc due to gravitational lensing. ASCA observations will provide a measurement of the temperature of the X-ray emitting gas; together with a recent ROSAT HRI observation of the spatial profile we can then estimate the mass distribution of this cluster, to be compared with the mass determined independently from modelling of the gravitational lensing and the velocity dispersion of cluster galaxies. ASCA will also give us an estimate of the abundance of iron in a distant cluster, an important datum for the study of the evolution of intracluster gas. ******************************************************
