************************************************************************* 52001 The discovery of bright, variable X-ray emission from Comet Hyakutake has unexpectedly opened an entire new field of research for X-ray astronomy. While several models have been proposed, none provide a satisfactory explanation for the surprisingly bright emission. In an effort to understand this new phenomenon, we propose spectral observations with ASCA of comets P/Encke and C/Hale-Bopp as part of a larger coordinated campaign. *************************************************************************
