************************************************************************* 52096 G347.5-0.5 is a newly discovered supernova remnant from the ROSAT All- Sky Survey. While it is one of the brightest X-ray remnants known, spectral studies from a short pointed observation with the PSPC cannot differentiate between temperature scenarios which imply vastly different evolutionary states. The remnant may be relatively young with a very high temperature or it may be of moderate age but with very large absorption. We propose a 50 ks ASCA observation in raster mode to map the entire remnant and provide sufficiently rich spectra to permit a detailed study of the evolutionary characteristics of the SNR. *************************************************************************
