************************************************************************* 52145 We propose to observe two "Narrow Line Seyfert 1's" (= NLS1's), Mrk 42 and Mrk 957, with ASCA. These objects were chosen because of their extremely narrow Balmer lines and strong optical Fe II emission. Our targets (and NLS1's in general) are known to have very steep soft X-ray spectra, possibly due to strong soft X-ray excesses. They also vary rapidly in soft X-rays. In our ASCA observations we are seeking to learn whether these objects are steeper than usual above 2 keV. We want to see whether an abnormally steep hard X-ray spectrum (already found in one NLS1 with ASCA) is a common property of NLS1's. We will also search for flux and spectral variability and probe iron K-alpha line emission. *************************************************************************
