************************************************************************* 53007 We have begun a systematic study of the spin pulses in intermediate polars using ASCA data, the first with sufficient resolution to give reliable results. This work has already overturned previous models, and has shown that different systems have distinctly different behaviours. We are therefore studying several X-ray bright intermediate polars to discover the range of possible behaviours and investigate the class as a whole. The newly discovered source RX1238-38 is one of the X-ray brightest intermediate polars, and the only one of these not so far to have been the target of a pointed observation. Initial optical followup has already revealed interesting features of the star, and we ask for the first X-ray pointing as a complement. *************************************************************************
