************************************************************************* 53028 There is growing evidence from ASCA quasar observations that distant quasars show intrinsic absorption which may be a function of redshift. If caused by intervening galaxies, the study of this phenomenon can lead to information on distant non-luminous matter. If intrinsic to the quasar then information on the quasar local material can be obtained. We propose to observe distant radio loud and radio quiet quasars to constrain the absorption. A measure of the iron line will set limits on absorbing material local to the quasars. *************************************************************************
