************************************************************************* 62120 The most important unanswered question concerning the Seyfert galaxy phenomenon is the fundamental nature of the energy source. Is this entirely an AGN "monster" or is there a contribution from massive hot stars? We propose a 40 ksec observation of IC 3639, a Seyfert 2 galaxy with evidence of a circumnuclear starburst, to complete a small sample of such objects with ASCA data and thus increase our ability to distinguish between these energy sources. Combined with X-ray data of similar objects, this will (1) provide a new tool for testing the importance of starbursts in the Seyfert phenomenon, (2) allow us to 'flag' Seyfert 2s with a strong starburst contribution, and (3) determine whether Seyfert 2s with starbursts contain deeply buried Seyfert 1 nuclei. *************************************************************************
