************************************************************************* 72135 We propose to complete a hard X-ray survey of a large, unbiased sample of type 2 Seyfert galaxies in order to explore the universality of the unified Seyfert model and the contribution of Seyfert 2s to the cosmic X-ray background (XRB). The new observations, in combination with archived ASCA data, will be used to search for previously undetected hidden type 1 nuclei, to construct an unbiased composite Seyfert 2 spectrum, and to measure the local volume emissivity of these objects. In combination with the array of multiwavelength data we have for this sample (complete radio, IR, and optical spectropolarimetry), these results will be used to test models for a Seyfert 2-dominated XRB. *************************************************************************
