************************************************************************* 72136 The most important unanswered question concerning the Seyfert galaxy phenomenon is the fundamental nature of the energy source. Is this entirely an AGN "monster" or is there a significant contribution from massive hot stars? We propose observations of Mkn 266, NGC 7674, ESO 362-G8, Mkn 1073, and Mkn 78, all Seyfert 2 galaxies with a circumnuclear starburst, to complete a small sample of such objects with ASCA data and thus increase our ability to distinguish between these energy sources. Combined with X-ray data of similar objects, this will provide a tool for testing the importance of starbursts in the Seyfert phenomenon, allow us to 'flag' Seyfert 2s with a strong starburst contribution, and determine whether Seyfert 2s with starbursts contain deeply buried Seyfert 1 nuclei. *************************************************************************
