UDON3 released

JAXA has released the third-generation of the web-based interactive visualization tool Universe via DARTS ON-line (UDON), called UDON3, which allows users to interactively browse astronomical images, light curves, and energy spectra obtained by JAXA’s X-ray astronomy satellites. UDON3 is designed to support efficient research using large archive datasets by enabling users to quickly inspect spectral and timing characteristics through preliminary analysis before downloading the data. After the release of UDON for Suzaku, which was based on IDL, we developed the IDL-independent second-generation (UDON2) and extended support to ASCA and Hitomi. However, both earlier generations extracted data on the DARTS server in response to user requests, which caused performance degradation under heavy access loads. In the third-generation UDON3, positional and spectral information are extracted in advance from the satellite event data and stored in Parquet format for each observation. Since the visualization is performed entirely on the client side, UDON3 achieves dramatically improved speed and responsiveness. The figure in the right-hand side is a hyper-link to UDON3 for Cyg X-3, which is an anomalous X-ray binary. Thanks to the unprecedented energy resolution of XRISM/Resolve, complex iron K-band structure is clarified for the first time.
