FAQ
About data
What kind of data are available?
DARTS archives not only the scientific observation data, but also the auxiliary data necessary for scientifc data analysis, telemetry data, spacecraft orbit/attitude data, and HK (housekeeping) data.
How can I obtain the data?
There are several methods.
- Obtain through HTTP direct access
Click on "Using Scientific Data - HTTP Direct access via HTTP to the data archive directories" on the DARTS top page to obtain data from the directory of the satellite or spacecraft of interest. Please refer to the 00readme.txt file located directly under each satellite/spacecraft directory for the description of the data. - Obtain by wget command
If you want to download an entire directory by direct HTTP access, it is convenient to use the wget command. (Example of Suzaku satellite) wget -nv -m -np -nH --cut-dirs=3 -R "index.html*" --execute robots=off --wait=1 https://data.darts.isas.jaxa.jp/pub/suzaku/ver2/101005010/ Specify the URL of the data you want to download, and change the following options as appropriate to download the data. The " --cut-dirs=NUMBER : option is required to ignore the specified number (NUMBER) of hierarchical structures on the remote side. In this example, only the local directory "101005010" is created. - Obtain from the Satellite and Spacecraft page
Scroll down the DARTS top page, click on the image of the satellite or spacecraft you are interested in, and go to "Data" on the left side menu, where you will find a description of the data and a link to the data. In addition to the data, "Instruments" and "Analysis" are also listed on the satellite and spacecraft page for your reference. - Obtain from the application
Click "Using Scientific Data" - "Web applications for the Data acquisition and display" on the DARTS top page to go to the application list page. DARTS contents such as search system, Quick Look function, data list, etc. are introduced to make it easier to find the data you are looking for.
Where can I see the images?
Recommended images for general users are available from
https://darts.isas.jaxa.jp/general/gallery/
For other astronomical data, we recommend the following application:

Where can I obtain the orbit data?
The data can be obtained from the DARTS top page under "Using Scientific Data" - "Acquisition of the raw telemetry and orbit data".
Do you have HK (housekeeping) data?
Some satellites and spacecraft release HK data from DARTS, while others do not. Click "Data" on the left tab of each satellite or spacecraft page to check the availability of HK data, or use HTTP direct access to go to the directory of the satellite or spacecraft you are interested in and check the availability of HK data.
How can I open the data files?
The standard data formats in use vary by field of study. The following is a list of the typical formats in each field.
<Astrophysics and Solar Physics>
FITS format is mainly used. FITS file extensions can be set arbitrarily, and various extensions such as *.fits, *.evt, *.lc, etc. are used. Dedicated software is required to open the files.
<Solar-Terrestrial Physics>
CDF format, netCDF format, FITS format, etc. are mainly used. Dedicated software is required to open these files.
<Lunar and Planetary Science>
Observation data are provided in various formats such as text and FITS, and auxiliary data such as orbital data and HK (housekeeping) data are provided as SPICE kernels. To handle SPICE kernels, you need the SPICE toolkit. DARTS publishes these data in a structured format with a set of data description documents according to a standard called PDS.
For details on each data format and the software required to open the files, please refer to the following.

Is there an easy way to see the data file content?
To open and view data in formats such as FITS, CDF, netCDF, and SPICE kernel, you need dedicated software. Please refer to "How can I open the data files".
However, for those who are not able to open the data files, or who want to look at the data without dedicated software, QuickLook (QL) is also available.
Please refer to "Data" in the left side menu of each satellite or spacecraft page, or go to the directory of the satellite or spacecraft you are interested in via HTTP direct access, and look for QL.
DARTS also provides a number of applications that allow you to search for data while viewing quick images.
Try one of the applications listed in the Web applications for the Data acquisition and display that can display images.
I want to know what information is needed for data analysis.
Information necessary for data analysis can be found under "analysis" in the left side menu of each satellite or spacecraft page.
Is the data available to everyone? Is there a fee to use the data?
In principle, data released by DARTS can be used free of charge, including commercial use, in accordance with the ISAS Data Policy However, the use of some data may be restricted due to copyrights held by other organizations. Please check the web page for data whose use is restricted.
