XRT/XIS: Energy resolution (FWHM) at 5.9 keV

Calibration status and caveats

  • XIS mode: Normal, SCI-on, 5x5/3x3, Processing ver: 1.x, HEASOFT ver: 6.2, CALDB ver: **
    • Time history of the apparent line width of the Mn Kalpha line (Ref. Provisional method to analyze the XIS data with SCI)
Due to the decrease of the energy resolution of the XIS after launch, excess line widths of the Mn Kalpha line (~20-35eV in the Gaussian sigma) will be seen if one utilizes the RMF that was build based on the ground calibration. Please see this page for a method to create a RMF appropriate for the SCI-on, ver1.x data.

  • XIS mode: Normal, SCI-off, 5x5/3x3, Processing ver: 1.x, HEASOFT ver: 6.2, CALDB ver: **
    • Time history of the apparent line width of the Mn Kalpha line
Figure 1 shows apparent line widths of Mn Kalpha obtained with the RMF file build based on the ground calibrations "ae_xi?_rmfparam_20061024.fits". The excess widths are increasing functions of time, and about 50 eV in 2006-June and 70 eV in 2006-December for the four XIS sensors.

  • XIS mode: Window, SCI-on
    Under investigation.

  • XIS mode: Window, SCI-off
    Under investigation.

  • XIS mode: Burst
    Under investigation.

  • XIS mode: 2x2
The energy resolution for the 2x2 editing mode was investigated using the XIS0 data of E0102. As shown below, the energy resolution of the 2x2 mode is consistent with that of the 5x5 mode within the statistics.

Figure 2: Energy resolution for the XIS0 data with the 2x2 editing mode, estimated at the 0.65 keV O8 Lyalpha line. The difference of the resolution [eV] relative to the 5x5 mode is plotted against the day since the launch.
