It was observed twice with high-quality X-ray spectrometers on-board the XMM-Newton satellite. The two observations are separated by half a year and the spectra significantly differ from each other. The difference can be well explained by a variable covering fraction of a cold (very low-ionised) absorber (Ricci et al., 2010). Two additional Swift data, separated by five days, suggest that the variability may occur at time-scales as short as a few days. The ultimate goal of the proposal is to locate this variable absorber by the determination of the typical time-scale of the variability. We therefore propose a series of observations of Fairall 51 with short exposures.
