The purpose of the observations is to test, verify, and calibrate models for diffuse X-ray emission from the heliosphere, the source of both a significant contamination for observations of extended structures in the cosmic diffuse X-ray background as well as a source of diagnostic information for the solar wind and structure within the solar system. A well-calibrated model for heliospheric SWCX emission can be used to untangle the very local and more distant components of the observed soft X-ray background affecting our understanding of the Milky Way and the local universe.
