Images from the Pearson-Readhead Survey in Space, using the VSOP Space VLBI Mission
The images below represent 21 separate 5 GHz observations using the VSOP
space VLBI satellite, HALCA, in combination with arrays of ground-based
radio telescopes. This combination produces a "virtual" radio telescope
with a diameter of approximately 30,000 km, almost three times the diameter
of the Earth. Such a large diameter telescope provides higher resolution
images than can be achieved with only ground telescopes. For each of the
21 sources below we compare the low resolution image made with only the
ground telescopes (left hand panels) with the high resolution image made
with the combined ground and space telescopes (right hand panels).
These observations form part of an effort by an international team of
astronomers to image a complete sample of active galactic nuclei at high
resolution. This team should be contacted for permission to use these
images in presentations or publications.
