The purpose of the observations is to test, verify, and calibrate models for diffuse X-ray emission from the heliosphere, the source of both a significant contamination for observations of extended structures in the cosmic diffuse X-ray background as well as a source of diagnostic information for the solar wind and structure within the solar system.
